When Life Breaks Your Wrists, Write a Song Anyway.
Turning Limitations into Your Greatest Creative Superpower

Hey Thousand Echoes friends,
Just wanted to drop in and give you an honest update from the last few weeks.
On June 28th, I fell off a chair and broke both of my wrists. One required surgery. The other is still healing in a brace. Not exactly how I imagined kicking off the summer…

Miranda (my wife) took these of me just before they wheeled me in for surgery
But life had other plans — and as strange as it sounds, these limitations opened creative doors I didn’t know existed.
Right after surgery, I launched into directing a songwriting camp with 11 incredible students. One day, while all the campers we’re in practice rooms writing I found myself with about 20min of down time… with only a few working fingers, I sat at a piano chopstick-style and came out with a brand new song in 12 minutes. That track became a collaboration with a visual artist and filmmaker I met at the camp names Padraic O’Meara. Together, we created one of the most powerful and cinematic pieces I’ve ever been part of — right in the middle of my healing.
This whole experience reminded me of something I say often:
🛠️ There are no rules in songwriting, only tools.
And sometimes the limitations themselves become the most powerful tool of all.
Whether you're working with a broken wrist, a broken heart, or just the everyday doubts that come with being a creative — you still have something to say. And saying it can be your breakthrough.
Damian Lillard (yes, the Blazers legend!) said after his Achilles injury:
“I get to come back from this.” -DAME
That mindset hit me hard. I’ve been thinking of my recovery the same way — not as a setback, but as an invitation.
To all the writers, artists, and dreamers reading this:
Whatever limitations you’re facing right now — lean in.
Let them teach you something new. Let them stretch your creativity.
Let them be your superpower.
Stay creative. Stay human.
