🎙 Start Before You’re Ready: Why I Finally Hit Record (Unscripted)

GET OVER YOUR FEAR AND JUST START SOMETHING.

I’m 43 years young and I’m JUST getting warmed up, everyone! Truly, age DOES NOT MATTER.

Most people wait until everything feels perfect before they start.

The right mic.
The right setup.
The right script.
The perfect version of themselves.
But here’s the truth no one tells you—

perfection is the enemy of momentum

I know this because I’ve spent the last couple years learning, preparing, planning, and second-guessing. And finally, I did the one thing I was afraid to do:

I turned on the camera, unscripted, and hit record.

Thousand Echoes Was Never Just a Studio - (but… I didn't know it until recently)

Just before the lockdowns of 2020, my wife Miranda and I began turning our garage into a recording studio—a dream I’d been chasing for decades. My dad helped me frame it and advised on the build. I finished mid-way through 2020 and we filled it with all the guitars, basses, synths, pedals, mics, pre-amps, and gear I’d collected over 30+ years. I called it Thousand Echoes, and even etched the name of the studio in epoxy and aggregate into the studio floor. Over time, that name became something more: a symbol of dreams that won’t die quietly.

For 4+ years, that space was where music lived for me—writing, producing, collaborating. It’s sacred (to me). But when we moved to Redding, CA in August 2024 for Miranda to attend school, I found myself without the space.

And I had a choice to make:

Let the dream pause—or let it evolve.

From Studio to Story

That’s when the idea of turning Thousand Echoes into more than just a physical studio began to bloom.

What if it could be a platform?
What if it could follow me—wherever I go?
What if it could serve more people than just the ones I work with in person?

So I started the Thousand Echoes YouTube channel. I paired it with this very newsletter, committed to putting out one video and one email every week. I didn’t (and still don’t) have it all figured out. But I know I’m meant to do this.

Because I’ve spent the last 32 years as a songwriter and creative, and I’ve never felt more called to teach, guide, and pour into others.

The Coaching Spark

In November 2024, I got to coach a small group at a songwriting camp called Fathering Artists. It was my first time on the teaching side of things—and it was like someone turned on the lights.

Watching people create in real time, helping them shape ideas into something meaningful—that’s when it hit me: this is what’s next. Not instead of music. But because of music.

That spark has grown into something bigger. I was asked to direct a songwriting camp this summer in my hometown, and I’ve been building curriculum ever since. Thousand Echoes is becoming an educational ecosystem in addition to a recording studio, a collaborative project with my wife, etc. and I’m finally saying yes to the part of me that loves coaching, sharing, and seeing others come alive.

Why I’m Committed to Creating (Even If It’s Messy)

I’m 43 now. I’ve got two little boys who are already showing signs of musical gifting. Part of why I’m doing all this is to leave a creative legacy—not just for subscribers or students, but for them.

Maybe this channel never blows up?! Maybe this newsletter only ever reaches a few hundred people?!

But they’ll know I went for it. That I didn’t wait for permission. That I didn’t let fear or perfection hold me back.

And I want the same for you!

Your Reminder for Today:

✅ Start the YouTube channel.
✅ Write the book.
✅ Record the song.
✅ Build the studio.
✅ Teach the class.
✅ Let it be messy. Let it be real. Let it be now.

Because momentum doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from movement.
